Did the contractor give you a complete bid? Does the bid describes the full scope of work, or are things left open and vague?
Does your bid including a whole job? Are all necessary changes explained and covered, such as relocating electrical, plumbing and drywall patches as necessary, all areas not included in the project clearly defined (such as flooring, etc.) Do they supply incidental items such as sink strainer, airgap, gas lines, water lines, water shut offs and other items where are needed? Many of these items contractors will charge you a premium for are not include in the original bid…nickel and dime-ing you at every turn.
